Section for Fundamental Engineering was established in 1957 as the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Over the decades, it has undergone various transformations, from the Chair of Fundamentals of Engineering in 1996 to its current form, following the development of curricula and the implementation of the Bologna Process.

The teaching activities, led by Professor Mirjana Čurlin, PhD, and Associate Professor Maja Benković, PhD, include courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. A special feature of the Cabinet is the interdisciplinarity of its research and the scientific and teaching collaboration with other constituents of the University of Zagreb in the field of technical sciences.

The Cabinet shares resources and equipment with the Laboratory for Measurement, Regulation and Automation and the Laboratory for Unit Operations, providing students with a comprehensive approach to engineering disciplines.
