If a student requires medical assistance, for example in cases of trauma, acute inflammatory or infectious diseases, or other acute conditions requiring treatment, and does not have a chosen general practitioner/family physician in Zagreb, they are entitled to use primary healthcare services (except for certification of temporary incapacity for work) with any contracted primary healthcare physician, under the same conditions as with their chosen physician. This includes medications prescribed via e-prescription and primary laboratory diagnostics ordered via electronic referral.
After medical care is provided, the physician will issue a document (Medical History Record from Primary Healthcare Practice) confirming the student’s health status on the date of issue and any prescribed therapy, and will certify it with a signature and practice stamp.
This does not affect the student’s status with their chosen physician in their place of permanent residence.
Students are also entitled to receive e-prescriptions or e-referrals remotely (by phone or email) from their chosen physician in their place of residence, for example in cases of chronic illness or continuation of ongoing therapy, throughout their studies away from home.
Although a primary healthcare physician is normally chosen for at least 1 year, persons absent from their place of residence for more than 3 months may change their chosen physician during this period. For this reason, we recommend that students coming to study in Zagreb select a primary healthcare physician at one of Zagreb’s Health Centres.
