Biotechnology

Biotehnologija

The programme is based on the latest scientific achievements in chemistry, biochemistry, and biology, with a special emphasis on molecular biology and microbiology, as well as engineering expertise, aiming to educate specialists for the broader field of biotechnology.

According to the 1992 definition by the European Federation of Biotechnology, biotechnology 'integrates natural and engineering sciences to achieve the application of organisms, cells, parts thereof, and molecular analogues for products and services.' Based on this definition, biotechnology is a science as ancient as the traditions of brewing beer, winemaking, and preparing fermented foods. Yet, it is also entirely modern and contemporary, utilising technologies based on recombinant DNA, hybridomas, other higher-organism cell cultures, biosensors, and biochips.

Applications of biotechnology

The range of products expands daily, from traditional biotechnology products – such as baker's, food, and feed yeast, beer, wine, and alcohol, as well as organic acids – to hundreds of new food, pharmaceutical, and diagnostic preparations. Furthermore, biotechnological processes play a significant role in environmental protection and agriculture.
