Laboratory for Toxicology was established in 1988 as a separate unit within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb. Until then, since 1974, teaching and scientific activities had been carried out within the Laboratory for Biochemistry, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology.

The Laboratory for Toxicology was founded by Professor Jasna Kniewald, PhD, who served as its Head until her retirement. The continuity of the Laboratory's development and activities was continued by Professor Branimir Šimić, PhD, followed by a long-time member of the Laboratory for Toxicology, Professor Ivana Kmetič, PhD. The current Head of the Laboratory is Associate Professor Teuta Murati, PhD.
