The Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Nutrition was established in 1956 as part of the Department of Food Quality and Analysis, and in 1964 it became an independent Unit for Food Chemistry and Nutrition within the Department of Biotechnology at the Faculty of Technology. Until 1962, it was located within the premises of Department of Food Quality and Analysis at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry. After relocating to its current building, the Laboratory has shared space with the Laboratory for Food Analysis for scientific research and teaching activities. Following reorganization and the establishment of the independent Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology in 1972, the Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Nutrition was formally established. In 1984, Prof. Nada Jurković founded a specialization in Nutrition within the Food Engineering study program. With the introduction of a new higher education system in 2005, Prof. Irena Colić Barić established undergraduate and graduate study programs in Nutrition, and in 2007 also a doctoral program in Nutrition. In 2009, the former Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Nutrition was reorganized into two laboratories: the Laboratory for Nutrition Science and the Laboratory for Food Chemistry and Biochemistry.
